Petros the Pelican was a local legend on the island of Mykonos. In 1955, a local fisherman pulled an exhausted pelican from the sea after it had drifted off course during its migration. It was the first time the islanders had seen such a creature, and it was love at first sight. He was described as sociable, cheerful and lazy, which perfectly represented the local spirit.
Petros the Pelican became a superstar of Mykonos and enjoyed the privileges that came with it. He ate for free wherever he went, was given pets by Hollywood celebrities and was even given a female pelican as a gift by the First Lady of the United States herself, Jackie Kennedy (those were different times!). However, at the height of his career, he was kidnapped by men from the neighboring island of Tinos and a war nearly broke out between the two islands, but Petros managed to return to Mykonos, where he lived happily ever after... which means he was essentially run over by a car and died in 1985. Petros' death did not leave Mykonos pelican-free, however, and today three of his successors continue the legacy. One of them is also named Petros, and his sense of direction is also said to be completely hopeless. #lostatlast
